This is true whether the automatons are made of metal, plastic and computer parts; or of flesh and blood. Dishonesty is essentially reflexive. The sophisticated person or machine which is programmed to be dishonest with others as a means of coping, will inevitably fall into the trap of being dishonest internally as part of the internal program of coping; and so lose the balance which is essential to making wise decisions, and be unable to recognize mistakes made, so be unable to take corrective action. People are essentially social creatures and usually cannot function in healthy ways in isolation from others of their own kind. When dishonesty is an accepted technique for coping with others, people become alienated from others; and to the extent that they are isolated from each other by their dishonesty they cannot function in healthy ways. People cannot function dishonestly with each other while at the same time being honest with themselves --- because people are essentially social creatures. Social life and personal life are mirrors to each other. Social life creates individuals and individuals create social life. When dishonesty becomes a central feature of either life it also becomes a central feature of the other life; for they are inseparable. When dishonesty becomes central to either life the natural consequence is that life disintegrates; people and communities lose whatever integrity they may have had. Honesty is essential to recognizing and dealing wisely with mistakes. Dishonest people are not wise. Wise people are not dishonest. Dishonest communities are not wise. Wise communities are not dishonest. To be wise we must be able to not only recognize technical mistakes, but we must also be able to recognize mistakes made in formulating, expressing and communicating our highest ideals, values and goals. Such reflexive behavior is not objective. (c) 2005 by Paul A. Smith in (On Being Yourself, Whole and Healthy) ==========================================================
