His parents, teachers, professors and mentors have always been objective; they have never demonstrated to Jack any integrative ways of behaving non- objectively. By example they have taught Jack to always behave objectively. In Jack's world of ideals the ideal way to behave is to avoid all non-objective behavior. Jack has a difficult time trying to behave objectively at all times. He has a difficult time in his efforts to avoid noticing that sometimes his behavior is not objective behavior. Sometimes he notices that his behavior is not objective behavior; and he then has a difficult time dealing consciously with this recognition that sometimes his behavior is not objective behavior. He has not learned how to deal with reflexive considerations of his own non-objective behavior; for his parents, teachers, professors and mentors have never demonstrated how to be in honest dialogue about one's own reflexive behavior. Jack lacks integrative coping skills. Jack is not able to integrate his reflexive perceptions of himself with his objective perceptions of the universe around him. Jack's universe lacks an integrative unity within his conceptions and feelings as regards his universe and his own place in his universe. Jack can not think and feel with integrity about himself in his universe because he cannot reflect openly and honestly about his own place in his objective, familial, communal, corporate, professional, etc. universes. Jack is not free to be self-honest because he feels he must always behave objectively as he has seen his parents, teachers, professors, and mentors behave. Jack's understanding of the universe will be incomplete so long as his conception of his universe does not include himself thinking and feeling about himself in relation to all parts of the universe which mean the most to him. Jack needs to learn that it is logically impossible to have an integrated view of the universe which is exclusively objective in character. Jack needs to engage in a new kind of research which will enable him to learn things which his parents, teachers, professors and mentors did not know, and were kept from knowing by their exclusively objective paradigm. Jack needs to begin with a sense of the importance of personal and communal integrity, and to recognize that they cannot be derived from analytic considerations. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
