Scientists know how to describe how nature behaves. They know the reliable patterns in what to non-scientists seem to be disorderly processes. Nature behaves as if it were always obeying certain laws of nature, and scientists know what those laws of nature are. Nature does not violate its natural laws, for they are not legislated laws; they are laws which describe reliably how nature behaves reliably. Humans violate virtually all humanly legislated laws. It is the exception that a human law exists for long without some human violating the law. Even presumably divine moral laws are regularly desecrated by human violations; e.g., the Ten Commandments. Human laws are not descriptions of how humans behave, but descriptions of how some humans think humans should behave. Natural laws are descriptions of the reliable ways in which nature behaves. Not all natural laws are descriptions of how nature behaves without exception, but many natural laws exist for which there are no known exceptions, no known violations; e.g.; conservation laws of linear momentum, angular momentum, energy, charge and baryon number. Other natural laws are probabilistic in nature: they declare the relatively low probability of certain violations of a "law". Scientists and engineers accomplish their "miracles" by respecting natural laws and designing equipment in terms of the reliable knowledge they have of how objects will behave consistently in light of the reliable descriptions which natural laws are of how natural objects behave. Scientists do not try to violate natural laws because there is no known way to try to violate any natural law. As regards human laws the problem is to minimize the probability of humans wanting to and finding ways to violate them to their own advantage. As regards natural laws there is no scientist who knows how to begin to find a way to violate a natural law. It is a logical absurdity to even consider trying to find a way to violate a natural law like the law of conservation of charge, momentum or energy. It is impossible to find a way to violate a natural law. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
