Even the terrible known is less fearsome than the unknown. Thus even the union which is desired entails apprehension of sorts. Jack may fear that in union with Jill he may lose his defensive security, his macho. Thus he may hold back giving himself to union and instead express his ambivalence and frustration over it in coercive ways which are alienative rather than integrative. Jill may fear that union with Jack will deprive her of the security she has come to know in her new freedom, and so express he ambivalence and diffidence in evasive maneuvers which avoid genuine union. Nations may fear union with traditional enemy nations because of uncertainty and fear regarding any loss of security which the nation may have felt it had due to its defensive posturing. Even the horrors of nuclear war are less fearsome to many than the unknown of becoming familiar with members of the enemy nation. Thus even international peace which is desired entails apprehension of sorts. Too much has been said about members of the enemy nation being the incarnation of evil for each to regard becoming familiar with the other with equanimity. In fact judging the other as the incarnation of evil is the root of the alienation which is the essence of evil. Integration is the essence of community and integrity. When integrity is feared there is a tendency for the community to disintegrate through alienation and the disintegration of dialogue which promotes unity and cooperation. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
