In order to be effective such a taboo must extend to be a taboo against experiencing emotions which one might wish to demonstrate through behavior. That which is not privately experienced is less likely to be openly and honestly demonstrated than that which is so thoroughly repressed that it does not rise to an overt state of consciousness. Thus the taboo must extend to private emotions which must not be demonstrated to the person in any reflexive way. Emotions must not become objective realities for the taboo to be effective. In a society with an effective taboo against emotions it is possible for true believers in the taboo to contend that emotions do not exist as objective realities. They may honestly contend that only behavior is the true measure of objective realities and so that emotions as private realities do not exist in any way worthy of public attention. Such a belief furthers the service of the taboo. To engage in an open and honest dialogue about private feelings, hopes, aspirations, fears, etc. is to violate the taboo and to be vulnerable to punishment for that crime against society and its privately held beliefs. Its belief in the taboo must be held privately, else the taboo would be publicly exposed and deprived of its power. The society lacks integrity because it can not publicly declare its private beliefs that private beliefs are not worthy of public examination. It can not publicly integrate its deepest beliefs into a coherent whole in communal expressions of unity. If we need to "get in touch" with our emotions there are no scholars, experts, authorities, etc. who can teach us what our emotions are. Such technocrats will not have made "getting in touch" a respectable activity. Getting in touch with ourselves is primarily a process of escaping taboos and collusions, and so not respectable. It is not a scholarly activity likely to be taught in graduate school, and so not likely to be taught by teachers who have gone to graduate school. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
