That which is holy is perceived as being whole. The holy reality is not perceived as a collection of elementary parts. The essence of being holy is not found in composition, but in being. The holy being is not discovered, understood or controlled by analysis and being dedicated to being objective in the approach. The holy being is encountered personally in the eternal now of an I-Thou relationship which is mutual rather than objective. An objective relationship between a subject and an object is not a mutual relationship. In an objective relationship the subject of the relationship subjects the object to being treated objectively in ways not chosen by the object which is not regarded as a subject capable of entering into a mutual relationship. In objective relationships the subjects can not consistently be reflexive and regard themselves without bias as being participants in interactions between objects according to objective laws of cause and effect. To be thoroughly consistent would require the subject in an objective relationship to perceive self as much as an object as a subject, and to perceive other objects as much as subjects as objects. To be without bias would require mutuality, but being objective requires a dedication to regarding self as fundamentally subjective, (being the subject, not the victim) rather than as fundamentally objective, (being the object, not the chooser). That which is holy is not the victim of objective analysis and is not subjected to disintegrative regard. That which is regarded as holy is respected for having integrity rather than for the details of its composition. Participants in holy I-Thou relationships do not regard each other as subject and object devoid of mutuality and self respect. Those who do not respect selves as having integrity can not have self respect with integrity, they can not enter into holy relationships with their whole being. They are disintegrated by their lack of mutuality in their relationships of self to others. They can not experience that which is holy because they are not dedicated to being whole persons seeking to promote both personal and communal integrity as free of bias as is possible in the eternal now.
