To search is to seek to find and recognize something
which is not "in hand" because it is lost or has not yet
been found and recognized. That which is not familiar is
harder to find and recognize than that which is familiar
and temporarily lost. That which is both familiar and
with which one is comfortable is relatively easy to find
and recognize, unless it is well hidden or misplaced in an
unexpected place. That which is both unfamiliar and with
which one might expect to be uncomfortable is not likely
to be searched for, and even if ostensibly searched for,
is not likely to be recognized and found. Ambivalent
searches are not usually successful.
Ideas, insights, perceptions, ideals and values which
conflict with those of the powerful members and traditions
of a society are often taboo. Powerful members of a
society and traditions may conspire in a game of mutual
self deception to deny the legitimacy of integrative
ideas, insights, perceptions, ideals and values; and so
make such essential elements of a community taboo:
dangerous to find, recognize as essential to integrity,
and as worthy of respect.
It is very difficult to find that which it is
dangerous to find, especially when it is well hidden in
unexpected places. A mere search will not uncover it. On
must search and re-search to find such an essential
element of communal integrity. In fact it may take
fantastic research to make a discovery of a taboo
essential element to building communal integrity in a
disintegrative society.
Fantastic research makes use of fantasy to transcend
the games of mutual self deception which characterize a
disintegrative society. Through fantasy one may in
private risk to conceive ideas, insights, perceptions,
ideals and values which in unconventional ways challenge
conventional elements of a disintegrative society.
Through such fantastic research one may discover the way
to promote both personal and social integrity which is
essential to survival.
Conventional researchers are dedicated to ideals
which are in conflict with fantastic research.
Conventional researchers seek to preserve the status quo,
no matter how disintegrative it tends to be. Through
analysis and conventional methods to understand, predict
and control they seek to be in full control. Yet they are
not free to reflect upon themselves because they must be
objective. They can not objectively understand and
control their own disintegrative behavior.
