A blessing may be a ritualistic action which attempts
to tap the power of another and use it for the benefit of
the focus of the blessing. Such a blessing is likely to
lack personal power and to be a technocratic effort.
Personal power does not flow without the blessing of the
source of the power. Personal power may be transmitted by
a messenger chosen by the source of personal power; it can
not be drawn coercively by a high priest of ritualistic
procedures. The power of personal blessings does not flow
from the technical sophistication and propriety of a
chosen ritual.
The power of personal blessings flows from personal
choice, affirmation and acceptance, not from technical
understanding, prediction and control. The power flows
from personal choices, affirmations and acceptance as they
demonstrate personal and communal integrity and offer the
beneficiaries images and role models which guide the way
to self regard, respect and esteem with both personal and
communal integrity. The power is not an impersonal power
which exists outside those offering the blessing, yet
manipulated by those offering the blessing. The power
flows from the choices and integrity of those who offer
blessings.
To be powerful and meaningful a blessing must be
given freely, not extracted. Blessings can not be owned
coercively. The reality and power of a blessing flows
from the free will of the choice and what the choice means
to the recipient. The meaning of a blessing to the
recipient depends upon how and why the blessing flowed.
The power of a blessing depends upon what it means.
The power of a blessing depends not only upon the
blesser, but upon how the blessed accepts and receives the
blessing. In the instance of extreme rejection of a
blessing the blessing may be without any power. A
blessing can not be forced with power upon a person who
chooses to reject the blessing. The power of a blessing
depends in part upon the integrity with which it is
accepted and received, incorporated into the being of the
blessed person. If it is not incorporated with integrity
it lacks power.
