Human behavior which is motivated by expectations of other people towards self is self-referential and so non- objective. If Jack does what he does because of what other people expect Jack to do, Jack's behavior is reflexive. It may be rebellious, responsive, reflective, cooperative, responsible, disciplined, conventional, unconventional, etc. In any case it is reflexive, and so non-objective. Human behavior which is motivated by moral, religious, ethical, legalistic, peer pressure, etc. is motivated by expectations directed towards self and so is self-referential and non-objective. This is the case especially when the behavior is motivated by self- expectations, whether self-generated or introjected into self by others. Even human behavior directed towards objects may be reflexive and so not objective. If Jack uses his car to get thrills of high speed and a sense of personal power his behavior toward the car is not objective, it is reflexive; determined by self-centered considerations. Objects which are used for purposes of self satisfaction are not treated objectively, viewed or observed without bias. The way they are treated is governed by self interest bias. Behavior is most objective and so least reflexive when an object is observed without investment of concern for how it will behave, without expectations which are vested with emotional considerations. There may be interest in how an object will behave in a situation, yet there not be a desire that it behave in some anticipated way. Curiosity at its best is dispassionate, most free to observe what happens in contrast to what was desired to have happen. It is difficult for a scientist to be genuinely objective about the design and conduct and results of an experiment intended to test a theory in which the scientist has invested personal interest, concern, reputation, enthusiasm, etc. Under such circumstances the scientist's interest is reflexive and not completely objective. To minimize bias scientists need to recognize how their behavior is reflexive. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
