Why then is it that so many college and university professors are unable to sympathize with their students' situations and so unable to help create contexts conducive to learning. What ideals of the professors stand in the way? Most professors have internalized the ideal of transcending bias by being thoroughly committed to objectivity as the way to truth in contrast to subjectivity as the way to bias. To fulfill the commitment to objectivity professors must repress the emotions which would undermine objective perceptions, including most emotions associated with sympathetic understandings of students instructional and learning situations. You can not sympathize with students' learning difficulties without becoming a participant in those difficulties, and so ceasing to be objective and detached from them. Objectivity requires detachment, suppression of emotions. The ideal of being objective is in conflict with the ideal of being sympathetic. Professors can not be sympathetic because they are committed to the ideal of being helpful to students. That is how they have been trained in graduate schools, to value objectivity more than they value students as persons. Graduate schools programs focus upon pure research as a way of affirming the ideal of objectivity. The technical training is a means to an end. The goal is to indoctrinate graduate students into the exclusive value of objectivity. The goal is not to resolve conflicts among human ideals, but to make one chosen ideal of ultimate importance by advancing it as the ideal way to transcend bias to the exclusion of all other ways of transcending bias. The ideal of exclusivity is the cause of objectivity's bias and the reason so many professors are unable to help students to learn with integrity how to be and help others be liberally educated.
