We must recognize that the roots of our dilemma are precisely those ideals which we most cherish: we did not choose them wisely. Ideals must be judged in terms of experience with our eyes open. Our ideals have too often lead to disintegration, alienation, frustration, violence and war. We can not survive that pattern much longer. To avoid disintegration we must commit ourselves to integrity and integration in a profound and ultimate way. We need balance. Balance involves a creative tension between complimentary ideals, values and principles. We need to balance conflicting ideals in ways which promote both personal and communal integrity in balanced ways. A healthy community exists with unity which flows from communications which are safely open and honest---because members of the community are profoundly dedicated to creating contexts within which all people may be secure in intimate relationships. We are secure to the extent that we may safely be vulnerable in intimate relationships which are open and honest. We can not be secure in situations where the ideal is to understand, predict and control human behavior. When applied to humans that ideal elicits defensiveness, deception, and distrust. This is why scientists are so rarely the most widely trusted members of a community. The assessment of the worth of our present set of ideals is not an objective process, and it can not become an objective process. Objective processes are not self referential. Judgments, choices, affirmations, commitments and decisions are inherently self-referential activities; they are by and about the subject who makes them. They are not objective, and can not be meaningfully understood in objective terms. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
