The desire for and receptivity towards integrity for
all members of your community are the essence of prayer.
Your community can not have integrity if its members
lack personal integrity, and vice versa. Your community
can not survive with meaning unless it has integrity, and
vice versa. To survive with meaning and to have meaning
in your survival---pray together for integrity. If you
place any desire or striving in the way of praying
together for integrity---you will not survive with meaning
in any integrated way.
Efforts to use prayer as a means to achieve other
goals at the expense of personal and communal
integrity---will disintegrate the community and the people
that strive to achieve such disintegrative goals.
Prayer is not the means to an end already chosen, but
the way to integrate the choices of ends which may be
cooperatively worked towards with personal and communal
integrity yearned for as the joint fruits to be harvested
by all.
Private prayer is the way we may integrate our own
desires in ways which will resolve conflicts within our
selves and our communities. In private prayer we may
transcend the collusions which imprison us, the double
binds which paralyze us, and the hopelessness which
defeats us---before we begin. We may in proper examine
and assess the ways in which taboo behavior might, or
might not, promote personal and communal integrity. We
may find ways to transcend conventional propriety---
and gain glimpses and visions in which through
communal prayer people avoid: falling into collusive
behavior patterns, inhibiting each other through taboos,
and double binding each other through contradictory
ultimate imperatives.
Prayer is not a competitive sport by which to gain
advantage, recognition, or other coveted possessions. It
is absurd to pray for that which will undermine the
integrity of any person or community. It is not absurd to
pray that absurd people might become integrated into
communities which have integrity; for thereby those who
pray will contribute to their own integration into such
communities. Apart from such integrative prayerful
behavior there is no hope.
