Jack says that Jill should not do what she is doing,
and that she should instead be fulfilling her
responsibilities to society as a woman. Jack says that if
Jill had not gotten into her head crazy notions about
women's rights she would be a good woman; and that crazy
ideas have corrupted her. Jack says that society has a
right for its members to fulfill their traditional
responsibilities, and should punish those members of
society that fail to fulfill their responsibilities.
Jack's friends agree with him. They also pass judgment
upon women like Jill who are failing to fulfill their
appointed responsibilities.
Jack and Jack's friends feel that their rights to be
served by obedient women are being violated. They do not
acknowledge that women have any rights, except to fulfill
traditional female roles in support of men's rights. How
then are we to adjudicate between men's rights and
women's rights.
No person should have a right which requires that
another person's integrity be violated. The integrity and
survivability of a society is violated when its members
seek to insure some rights by actions which entail the
violation of the integrity of members of the society.
No society can long guarantee men's rights at the
expense of women's integrity, nor vice versa.
It is not easy to sort out the cause-and-effect
consequences of human decisions regarding values,
priorities, and rights. Some people may feel that it is
their right and duty to obscure such cause-and-effect
consequences in order to maintain traditional rights and
privileges of select people who would suffer were the
truth to be known. The conviction that the truth must not
be known violates the integrity and survivability of a
society which can not stand to know the cause-and-effect
consequences of its members' decisions regarding
values, priorities, and rights. The society which
does not protect its own integrity, by protecting the
integrity of its members, will not long survive with
meaning for its members.
