Humans have survived by excelling in being adaptable. Humans have learned how to survive in the most perverse of circumstances, often by adopting perverse ways of coping. Too often perverse adaptations to perverse situations aggravate the perversity of the situations and confront other people with even more perverse situations than existed before. In this way human adaptability sometimes contributes to growing perversity. How are we to recognize perversity? What one person regards as perversity is another person's means to survival through adaptability. A group of people who have together survived by a certain adaptation will most likely regard as perverse anybody who regards their survival means as itself perverse. They are likely to regard the person passing judgment upon them as not having walked in like shoes, and so as unsympathetic to the perverse situation which led them to adapt as they did. How are we to find a basis for assessing perversity from a perspective which transcends limitations of particular human experiences? We need a basis for judgment which transcends all human provincialisms; which encompasses values which are transcendent to the human race. Relatively speaking the survival of the human race might be considered as more important than the welfare of any one member or group of members of the human race. Yet not just survival should be regarded as desirable. There must be some meaningful aspect to survival; e.g., freedom, health, enjoyment, integrity, justice; etc. Thus the meaningful survival of the human race with integrity, or something of that nature, might be regarded as the supreme human value. On such a basis we might make judgments as to whether or not some adaptation of specific people was perverse. An adaptation of some persons is perverse if it threatens the ultimate survival of the human race with integrity. Survival is threatened when integrity is threatened. Adaptations are perverse if they threaten overall human integrity---even when the adaptations contribute to the short term survival and satisfaction of provincial positive values. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
