They attempt to compensate for their lack of intimacy by defending themselves through the use of manipulative technologies. Such technologies include manipulations of the truth --- to make themselves appear to be other than they really are; e.g., stronger, more invulnerable, more secure, more competent, more confident, etc. The use of such technologies encourages those people whom the insecure people fear to reciprocate in kind, in an arms race which is regarded by each side as the means to security. Participants in an arms race are concerned about the loyalty of members of their team. Participants on each side of the race are not secure in their trusting of members of their own team. They therefore conduct security clearance checks to try to eliminate from their own team any members who are not trustworthy, members who might fail to manipulate truth in acceptable ways. Members who might be open and honest with members of the other arms race teams are not to be trusted, because openness and honesty will undermine the possibility of their team winning the arms race. Part of the security clearance procedure has to do with making sure that members of each team fully trust the use of high technology as the proper means for achieving security. Any persons who believe that the key to security is non-technological responses to the people who are feared, are themselves persons to be feared by technocrats. They may behave openly and honestly towards the enemy, and give away secrets which are essential to technocratic security; the security of the technocratic system. Technocrats on all teams in the arms race are in the business of defending technocracy. That fact is the main secret which security clearances are designed to defend. Technocrats do not want the secret to get out, that the key to security is the promotion of the freedom to be safely vulnerable in open and honest relationships with the people you most fear. If that secret gets out, they will lose their technocratic powers to dominate human relationships. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
