The biased person for some reason wants to perceive reality in ways which do violence to the nature of reality, thus undermining the reliability and helpfulness of the relationship between the perceiver and the rest of reality. Bias does violence to the integrity of relationships, especially to the honesty of relationships between the biased person and what the biased person relates to in a biased way. Biased perceptions lead to biased evaluations, judgments, decisions, behavior, conclusions, etc. Because of some perverting motivations the biased person is not free to have integrity, to be whole, to relate honestly. By understanding, predicting, and controlling conditions which generate such perverting motivations we may promote integrity; or undermine it. Our biases may lead us to undermine integrity through our best efforts to do what we believe is "best". What we perceive to be "best" depends upon our ultimate motivation. Our ultimate motivation may be: personal pleasure, personal survival, personal high self regard, personal equilibrium, personal vitality, personal integrity. The focus may shift from personal to special others who are exclusive extensions of self---with costs being assessed against non-special persons and things. The focus may broaden further to larger non-exclusive considerations. The less exclusive our scope of interest and concern, the less biased we may become, and the more motivated to promote personal and communal integrity as the ultimate worthy goal, value, ideal, end, etc. Especially perverse motivations are engendered by requirements of evaluations and judgments which lead to rejection when perceptions do not conform to some conventional standard. Such requirements of rejection generate biases by generating motivations to perceive dishonestly---to avoid the need to reject. The affectively closer to us is that which we might have to reject, the more the requirement undermines integrity. Requirements which lead to self-rejection and guilt--- generate especially tragic biases and dishonesty which undermine personal and communal integrity. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
