Jill invites me to be a real person in meaningful inter-personal relations. It seems to be to be risky business in which I would not have full control. I fear that I might make mistakes and be rejected. Religious leaders tell me that there is an eternal life after death and that if I make certain kinds of mistakes now my life after death will be eternal suffering. To help me avoid eternal suffering they promise to guide me now by threatening immediate suffering each time I make a mistake, and threatening total personal rejection if I violate one of their big taboos. It seems to me that I had better not make any mistakes! The best way not to make any mistakes is to lead a life in which it is impossible to freely make any mistakes. I will freely choose to believe what scientists tell me and lead my life according to impersonal laws of nature which do not leave me free to choose. In that way I cannot be held accountable for my actions. I will only need to point to the laws of nature which lead me to behave as I did. I better do my homework so that I will know the laws of nature which lead me to behave as I do. To find these laws of nature I will need to be very objective and not get involved in any self-referential activities or statements. You cannot be objective if you get emotionally involved in what you are studying or study anything in which you are emotionally involved. Jill keeps distracting me from my search for the impersonal laws of nature which will make it possible for me to explain away my mistakes.
