An educational system which is not sensitive and
responsive to its' students' own needs and potentials---
will tend to repress its' awareness of its' own potentials
and needs, and substitute in their place artificial needs
and demands for performance. Such a process is tragic in
the classical Greek sense that good possibilities are
destroyed in the interests of conformity to inappropriate
ideals.
Conformal educational systems are not dedicated to
the use of communication rights to promote personal and
social integrity. Conformal educational systems are
dedicated to the realization of abstract ideals formulated
to satisfy the needs of narrowly trained people who are
insensitive and unresponsive to the needs and potentials
of the full range of students. Creativity, initiatives,
curiosity, and joy are represses in the interest of being
in conformity with what some manipulative authoritarians
say should be done.
Educational systems which emphasize convergent
thinking and behavior which leads to agreement regarding
the "right" answer, way, procedure, and opinion---are
systems which generate tragic conformal behavior. Rigorous
scientists are especially prone to promote such
educational systems because of the high value which
scientists place upon agreement regarding what is the
right answer to the kinds of questions which they think
worthy of consideration. Many scientists tend to neglect
questions to which there are many possible ways of
responding with integrity and wisdom. Through lack of
experience with such questions, when they are forced to
deal with such questions they respond to them with the
implicit assumption that there is a right way to respond,
and further assume that their particular set of biases
will lead unambiguously to the right response.
For a science education center to be worthy of
designation as a center of excellent science education it
must transcend the scientists' understandable tendency
towards promoting tragic conformal thinking and behavior.
To do this the center must in some way affirm the
promotion of open and honest dialogue as the transcendent
value which will guide efforts at conflict resolution
within the center.
