     Scientists  are prone to believe that the essence  of
coping is in the intensity of dedication/effort and in the
correct choice of technological means.   When a scientific
profession   has   problems  as   a   profession---it   is
exceedingly difficult for the leadership of the profession
to believe that  the  unbalanced  values of the profession
are  the  source  of  the  problems.    The  leaders  have
dedicated their minds,  hearts,   and  souls to the belief
that their profession's values transcend all other values.
That  belief excludes the possibility that any  additional
values  might  add  balance  to  those  affirmed  by   the
profession. Thus  the  professional leaders are  prone  to
rededicate themselves  to their unbalanced values,  and to
seek new technologies by  which  to  cope in  keeping with
their traditional values.

     To each value there is a range of propriety, a set of
contexts in which the value offers appropriate  motivation
and  direction.   Some values have very limited ranges  of
propriety, and others nearly unlimited ones.  Values which
dominate  human behavior in ways which generate alienation
are  operating  outside their limited range of  propriety.
Objectivity and thorough analysis have their place;  but a
funeral service, concert,  and intimate moments with one's
lover  are hardly appropriate contexts for being dominated
by  a  dedication to objectivity  and  thorough  analysis.
Neither  will  compulsive dedication  to  objectivity  and
analysis  lead the way for scientists seeking to deal with
students'   learning difficulties and fears of failure  in
the scientists' rigorous courses.

     Many  scientists  have difficulty  dealing  helpfully
with  their  practices of  sexual  discrimination.    They
pretend  that  sexual relationships  are  unimportant  and
unworthy of their professional consideration,  then out of
fear of involvement in non-scientific sexual relationships
they take  steps  to  minimize  heterosexual  professional
relationships with members of the complementary sex; i.e.,
they practice subtle forms of sex discrimination which can
not  be  proven to exist through  objective  criteria  and
analysis.    To  defend  their  unbalanced  dedication  to
objectivity and  analysis, they rededicate  themselves  to
