The essence of coercion is the forcing of an internal change due to externally applied forces. For this reason coercion and violence are intimately related to each other. They are not identical because not all internal change involves the violation of integrity, even though the change may be induced through the application of external forces. Turning the winding knob on a mechanical alarm clock causes internal changes in the clock, but those changes do not constitute a violation of the integrity of the clock. Rather, in this instance coercion is part of the fulfillment of the destiny of the clock mechanism. Thus not all coercion entails violence. Coercion entails violence when it entails the violation of an integrity. In particular, coercion is violent when forces are brought to bear on persons to force them to be, feel, think, desire, communicate, act, etc. in ways which lack personal integrity. Such coercion entails internal conflicts and external misrepresentations. Personal coercion thus does violence to both personal and social integrity, and thus tends to undermine and destroy community. For this reason, community welfare is not advanced through the us of personal coercion, no matter what is the intended purpose of the personal coercion; e.g., not even if the intended purpose is to advance the community welfare. Often powerful people believe that they know what will be good for their community, and they seek to promote community welfare by forcing others to do what will be good for the community. They engage in coercive politics, economics, education, religion, and family life. In this way they violate the very integrity of persons and community which they are ostensibly seeking to promote. In their ignorance of the dynamics of personal and social life they initiate many tragic projects and events. No amount of technical analysis will reveal the tragic nature of their ways of coping---to those who respect such coercive efforts. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
