There are both personal and impersonal meanings which play roles in human lives. The impersonal technical meanings of symbols and actions do not play the central role in human satisfaction. The impersonal technical meanings of symbols and actions are means of communicating meanings which are important in human satisfaction, but they are not themselves the personal meanings which are essential to human satisfaction. Those meanings which are central and essential to human satisfaction are distinctly personal in nature; they are assigned, chosen, affirmed, etc. as acts of human desire and will---in ways which bind persons into communal personal relationships of mutual satisfaction. The realities which are thus created are not objective realities pre-existing before a discovery, and named upon discovery; they are created by acts of desire and will which are shared in the creation of community through dialogue. Disagreements about personal meaning may originate in the belief that personal meanings are objective realities. Those who hold such a belief are prone to disagree with the meanings which people choose to assign and create to give meaning to their lives. The people who believe in objective meanings are prone to believe that meanings are to be discovered in the objective realm, pre-existing prior to the discovery; real apart from the desires and choices of the discoverers. To such believers in objectivity the question is whether or not the discoverer has found a true reality and described it accurately; and thus the door is open for serious disagreements about the meanings which are described and affirmed. According to their beliefs they are acting properly in disagreeing with persons who affirm meanings which objectivists have not chosen to discover and affirm. Objectivists can not believe that it is by their choice that they have discovered that they can find subjective satisfaction and personal meaning in believing that they are discovering objective meanings which are true; independent of their choices and desires.
