However, this has been said by violent people to manipulate people to get the vulnerable to reveal what the violent people regarded as legitimate grounds for punishing the vulnerable people for doing that which the violent did not approve. Requiring honesty as a means to forced confessions is violent behavior and is not worthy of respect. It is not so much honesty and openness which is to be highly valued, but the context in which honesty and openness come naturally, without threat, risk, fear, danger, etc. "Honesty" which flows from violent manipulations is not true honesty. The victim of such manipulations finds it impossible to be truly honest, even with the best of intentions. The response of such a victim is not so much an honest response as it is a reflex reaction to the effort to cause an honest revelation. The attempt to extract an honest revelation so violates the victim that the reality which was to have been revealed is destroyed, and in its place is created a perverted reality which is the creation of the violator. The violator who punishes such a creation is passing judgment upon the fruits of his or her own violent behavior. The judgment is not upon the victim, but the violator. The facilitation of openness and honesty is the best policy. People who would be servants of the God of Love seek to facilitate openness and honesty by working to provide contexts in which people may fail safely. In such contexts they feel free to try to be creative, to take risks, to venture in explorations of new relationships and possibilities. Creativity is stifled by unloving standards which require success without fail as a condition for the acceptability of persons. When such standards are imposed---openness and honesty are inhibited, communication of new insights is thus inhibited, dialogue decreases, and life becomes dull. Thus the imposition of standards is sinful, full of alienative consequences. The facilitation of openness and honesty is a better policy than the imposition of standards. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
