Members of a healthy fellowship share a congruity among beliefs, convictions, perceptions, and the content of their communicative expressions. They say what they believe, and believe what they say. They can trust each other without fear of being mislead because of duplicity, ulterior motives, taboos, collusions, etc. Mutuality is the rule. Honesty is the rule and is never punished. Openness is expected and never inhibited by the excommunication of any person because of an open and honest expression. A healthy community is a healthy fellowship of diverse believers. A community is more than a collection of people living together under a set of conventions, traditions, rules, regulations, institutions, taboos, and collusions. Commonality without mutuality is not an adequate foundation for a healthy community. A conventional community is not a healthy community. A healthy community is a healthy fellowship of believers who are free of the guilt and inhibitions which are occasioned by taboos and collusions. A healthy community is based upon mutuality in all personal relationships; as regards: perceptions, evaluations, judgments, power, and authority. A healthy community is not dominated by any one person or a small group of powerful persons. Dominance inhibits openness and honesty. Authoritarian personal relationships are dominated by efforts to give misleading impressions, and the technologies required to give misleading impressions. To the extent that authoritarian relationships dominate a community, to that extent the community is diseased, ill- at-ease. The scientific community is a group of people about whom the above observations are relevant. The beliefs, convictions, perceptions, and communicative expressions of scientists must be congruous for the scientific community to be healthy. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
