It is frustrating to wanting to share while not feeling that it is safe to share. Should we be condemned for our thoughts, feelings, ideas, or desires; or for sharing them with others? Is not our feeling that it is not safe to be open and honest---a profound judgment upon our culture and/or sub-culture which has generated the context of our feeling? Are there any legitimate reasons for generating the feeling that it is not safe to be open and honest? Or, is such a feeling to be regarded as abnormal, something which a society should seek to minimize. Or; is the feeling (that it is not safe to be open and honest) to be used by a society to promote the fulfillment of conventional expectations? If the essence of evil is the promotion of alienation, then the abuse of such apprehensive feelings is evil. Some people do not feel the desire to share their private thoughts, feelings, ideas, and desires. They are spared the frustration of wanting to share, while feeling it is not safe to share. They wonder whether or not those who do want to share are normal, considering instead that it is normal to have certain aspects of one's self which are essentially private. To them, the alienation of conventional privacy is normal. They find it difficult to distinguish between required privacy and freely chosen privacy. They may feel that their choices to keep some aspects of their lives to themselves are free choices, and are puzzled by the thought of anybody wishing to choose otherwise. If people who want to share private aspects of their lives are regarded as abnormal, there seems to be little harm done in failing to respect their desires to be open and honest about the private aspects of their lives. What harm can there be in inhibiting abnormal behavior? Taboos, collusions, and laws which inhibit/prohibit indecent self- revelations will not hurt normal people who are free of "perverted desires". After all, society must take steps to keep "abnormal people" from offending the sensibilities of "normal people". It would be dangerous to authorize people to express any and all thoughts, feelings, ideas, and desires! (c) 2005 by Paul A.
