Other kinds of understanding come to us through holistic relating in personal terms. Each kind of understanding is appropriate to its own context, and inappropriate in other contexts. It is foolish to presume that any one kind of understanding is universally appropriate without respect for its specialized presuppositions. The scientist cannot understand another person through the analysis of the nuclei, atoms, molecules, hormones, cells, or organs of that person. The understanding which is achieved through such analysis is very limited, although complementary and valuable in its own way. More usually inter-personal understanding grows through relationships in which whole beings relate to each other. Yet, there are times when the scientists' analyses can complement such holistic understanding in essential ways; e.g., when due to genetic defects there are hormonal imbalances which can be corrected through the use of carefully selected drugs. Such drugs may open the possibility of inter-personal relationships which would otherwise be impossible. They are no substitute for inter-personal relationships as the context for holistic understanding. Neither is holistic personal understanding a substitute for the kind of understanding which the scientist can achieve through objective analysis. For either to exclude the other is foolish. Some kinds of understanding come from taking control of a situation and deciding which way the course of events should go. Other kinds of understanding come to those who dedicate themselves to the service of persons and causes which they acknowledge transcend their personal understanding and power to control. The two kinds of understanding are mutually complementary and cannot substitute for each other. Wisdom comes from understanding the appropriate contexts for each kind of understanding to grow and bear fruit, and from understanding the limitations of each kind of understanding---and so to know the contexts within which each kind of understanding is inappropriate, and perhaps alienative.
