Some people regard subjective perspectives as prone to bias, and objective perspectives as immune to bias. They fail to perceive the bias present in an exclusive choice of one over the other. There are relatively few tragic consequences to permitting objectivity to dominate purely cognitive activities. Tragic consequences do flow, however, when objectivity dominates the way in which people relate to and treat each other. Interpersonal relationships are not merely cognitive relationships. There are many aspects of inter-personal relationships which do not satisfy the presuppositions which are central to objective analysis--- so objective analysis is inappropriate to those aspects of inter-personal relationships. It is violent to treat such aspects of inter-personal relationships objectively--- objectivity is not fitting, not appropriate. Treating people objectively is often violent. In war the members of the enemy group are treated as objects, objectively. Attempts are made to understand, predict, and control their behavior in an objective way. Mutuality is not sought. Personal understanding is not the goal. Intimate inter-personal relationships are not desired. Objectivity dominates all efforts to understand, predict, and control. War is a violent process. In competitive religious, educational, athletic, political, business, and social activities---there is a tendency for objectivity to dominate in ways which violate the personal aspects of human relationships. Inter- personal relationships are perceived in objective terms, and non-objective aspects regarded as of lesser significance. Definitions of values, propriety, and acceptability are often cast in objective terms, rather than in more personal terms. Such casting is often motivated by sincere efforts to avoid bias and injustice. Yet again, the dominance of inter-personal relationships by objectivity---occasions violence as people are treated objectively, when they yearn to be treated personally. Exclusively objective perceptions do not avoid bias by being objective; for exclusivity is itself the essence of bias, no matter what is affirmed via the exclusivity. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
