Jill feels being the victim, and chooses to feel impotent to deal with injustice in any creative way. She regards the solutions to her problems to reside outside herself, and perceives herself as the pathetic victim of forces over which she has no possible control. From her point of view any efforts on her part are pointless, because overwhelming powers outside her are either unjust or indifferent to her needs. She believes such powers will undermine the effect or meaning of all her efforts. The perceptions she has chosen---she regards as representations of the real world. Jill the victim goes to Jack whom she perceives to be in a position of power, authority, and social respect. Jill seeks Jack's sympathy and asks that Jack authenticate her perception of her status as victim. Only such an authentication will validate his sympathy. She seeks confirmation of the reality which she has chosen to perceive---in order that she may be secure in its stability and comfortable in a sympathetic understanding of her role as victim in that reality. Jack does not choose to perceive Jill as impotent victim of powers over which she has no control. Jack perceives Jill as having the potential to mitigate many of the injustices in society of which Jill is the victim, and the ability to bring meaning to unfortunate circumstances. Jack hopes that Jill will choose to assume responsibility for the meaning of her life in a creative and positive way. Jack perceives Jill as having the power to choose to make positive contributions---so that others needs not suffer as much as Jill has. Jack is sympathetic, but not in ways which Jill wishes to accept. Jill rejects Jack's sympathy because of the terms under which he offers it--- that she accept some responsibility for her life. Jill is prone to cut herself off from Jack because he does not fulfill her expectations of him, regarding him as another of those powers which is casting her in the role of victim, with no sense or feeling of her suffering. The more she alienates herself, the more her perceptions of reality seem to be confirmed in people's lack of sympathy for her unfortunate circumstances. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
