Who a person is depends upon self-perception to a significant extent, and self- perception is influenced by communal perception of self- perception. Who a person is depends upon the person's behavior, upon others' perceptions of that behavior, and upon the person's own perception of their own behavior. Members of a community may feel they have a right to be informed about all aspects of a person's behavior---in order to form an informed perception of the person's behavior prior to affirming it. They may feel that they have a right to suspend judgment until they are fully informed about the person's behavior. They do not want to discover later that they made the mistake of affirming a person who, unknown to them, had engaged in improper behavior. Thus, some people withhold affirmation from people who insist upon keeping some aspects of their lives private---and fail to behave in ways which still the fears of judgmental persons who find it difficult to be comfortable with their self perceptions in a nosey community that does not respect people's rights to privacy. Thus nosey communities are likely to have in them members with identity problems---to the extent that they have within them private persons. Creative people are non-conformists in that they do other than what has been traditionally done. Breaks with tradition tend to generate anxiety on the part of traditionalists, so creative people often are creative in private---to minimize the anxiety of traditionalists. Nosey people who do not respect the creative people's right to privacy---are made anxious by their suspicions that the creative people are violating traditional taboos in private. Thus nosey people tend to violate creative people's rights to privacy---and so create a social context in which creative people experience identity crises. It should be noted that the nosey people's anxiety is occasioned by their private suspicions about the creative people's private behavior. Thus nosey people affirm their right to privacy as the grounds for denying creative people's rights to privacy! Emotional immaturity thus becomes the foundation for public policy! (c) 2005 by Paul A.
