A meaningful perception of a personal relationships with another person involves in an essential way a meaningful self perception of one's self as emotionally involved in that relationship. It is not enough to perceive the other person clearly, objectively, analytically---as an object for study. Meaningful personal relationships involve self perceptions which are not objective; thus, scientists who compulsively attempt to be objective in all situations---cannot have meaningful personal relationships. Scientists' self perception problems do not in an obvious way undermine their ability to cope successfully in dealing with objective relationships. Yet it is probably true that in the future emotionally mature scientists will be able to cope more successfully than can present day scientists who are compulsively objective in contexts where objectivity is counter-productive. Only emotionally mature scientists will be likely to perceive the ways in which compulsive objectivity undermines the effectiveness of emotionally immature scientists. The ability of a scientist to cope successfully in the objective domain does not indicate an ability to work wisely with people in the context of meaningful personal relationships. Helping people live meaningful lives involves far more than successfully coping with objective problems. Helping people approach their life situations meaningfully involves dealing with objective problems within the context of meaningful personal relationships--- and so requires the ability to perceive self in other than objective ways. There are no moralistic, ethical, legalistic, or other systematic ways of dealing with the dilemma to which we point here. The solution is not to be found in a better system of any kind, nor in a better way of administering any existing system. No moral, ethical, legalistic, philosophical, theological, economic, political, intellectual, social, or other kind of system will get to the root of this personal matter. The way out is through dialogue in and with Love. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
