FORMAL EXPERIENCE 791222 Formal experiences are meditated by formal patterns which dominate perceptions. Formal patterns are embodied in social traditions, cultures, languages, literature, mathematics, rituals, dances, science, music, political structures, institutions, etc. Descriptions of human experiences may become formalized, idealized, conventionalized, conformalized---and so come to mediate experiences. Formal patterns may be coercive in the way in which they mediate experiences; they may not be congruent with personal potentials. Formal education which focuses upon such formal patterns tends to be violent; and sensitive students rebel, and are prone to various forms of violence. Human values pertain to focal patterns; the patterns which are the focus of human lives. Different people focus their lives around different patterns: religious rituals, scientific rituals, political rituals, family rituals; music, dance, painting, singing, baseball, football, basketball, and other competitive rituals; social proprieties, moral codes, social traditions; etc. Educational processes are the ways in which adults pass on their most important patterns to the next generation, and may either heighten or deaden young people's potentials for direct sensory experiences. Sensory experiences are the way people keep in touch with reality, themselves, and each other. Formal patterns may inhibit or facilitate sensory experiences. Some formal patterns may tend to repress sensory experiences; e.g., sexual experiences are often inhibited by moral patterns. Formal patterns may tend to displace sensory experiences by moving in to substitute for direct sensory experiences; e.g., discussing the intimate writings of the poet to the exclusion of discussion the intimate sensory experiences the members of the class. Some formal patterns may only be abstract; limited to simplified (idealized) models developed to represent some very limited aspect of a portion of reality apprehended via sensory experiences. Such models may so dominate human consciousness as to get in the way of personal sensory experiences; e.g., the astronomer may be more interested in the equations which model an eclipse of the sun that in personally experiencing the eclipse with friends.
