RATIONALIZATION 791217 People who value reason and logic more than emotions tend to rationalize their emotions. They feel that they must explain, justify, legitimize, etc. their basic desires and feelings. It is not enough to desire, the desire must be made to appear proper according to some formal system of definition of what is proper. To accept primitive desires on their own ground is to threaten formal systems and those people whose lives are dedicated to the maintenance of formal systems. Such formalists require rationalization, requiring others to explain, justify, legitimize their desires, emotions feelings, etc. That which can not be rationalized must be suppressed, denied, excused, forgiven, punished, etc. Thus legalists tend to define which feelings, emotions, desires, etc. are to be permitted, and on what grounds. In this way many personal experiences are defined to be improper, and it is dangerous to admit, much less accurately describe, such experiences---even if they are completely subjective. Rationalizers are threatened by subjective experiences which they can not rationalize. Emotionalization is the mirror image of rationalization. People who value emotions more than reason and logic may seek to understand logical conclusions and reasonably chosen courses of action --- in emotional terms, making them acceptable by putting them in an affective context which gives them personal meaning. Such effectively oriented people tend not to experience the force of logic and reason of the formal sorts which preoccupies rationalizers. Understanding is contextual and personal in nature, not analytic and formal. That is comfortable which is familiar in personal experience or similar to that which is familiar. Logical conclusions may not be comfortable, and be in need of emotionalization to make them comfortable. A course of action which reason demands may be resisted until it is emotionalized, just as for other people a desire is resisted until it is rationalized. Both emotionalization and rationalizations are efforts to maintain integrity. People try to perceive themselves and their behavior as having integrity. Because of various dichotomies this often difficult, and the processes by which they attempt to perceive integrity --- may themselves lack integrity. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
