Violence may occur when duty is regarded as absolute --- without respect to feelings. One person may manipulate situations so as to impose upon another person a duty which the other person feels disposed to reject. If legalistically defined duties are regarded as absolute --- they may place unrestrained power in the hands of manipulative persons who have little respect for other people's feelings. Duties are contextually defined and manipulative persons can create the contexts which occasion duties, with little respect for the affective needs of those upon whom the duties are placed. If parents have placed upon them absolute duties with respect to meeting their children's needs, the children may manipulate contexts so that the parents must do that which they do not feel like doing. Such parental obedience to their children's bidding will mislead the children and spoil them. The children will learn to be insensitive and disrespectful with regards to their parent's feelings. Parental duties must be counter- balanced with children's duties to respect parents' feelings. It is perverse to regard parental duties as absolute --- without regard for parental feelings. If students have placed upon them absolute academic duties with respect to meeting their teacher's expectations, the teachers may manipulate contexts so that the students' must do that which they do not feel like doing. Students obedience to their teachers' bidding will mislead the teachers to abuse them. The teachers will learn to be insensitive and disrespectful with regards to their students' feelings. Students' duties must be counter-balanced with teachers' duties to respect students' feelings. It is perverse to regard students's duties as absolute --- without regard for students' feelings. Legalistic systems tend toward perversion because they can not humanely take into account subjective aspects of personal relationships. People can not truly live humane lives based upon legalistic definitions of duties. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
