We may relate to a person's role without relating to the person. We may be interested in the role for our own personal reasons, but not be interested in the other person as a person apart from the role the other person is in. Roles are not persons, and persons are often offended when they are regarded only in terms of the role in which they are cast. It is not very fulfilling to be desired only because of the role in which you are cast. It is more meaningful to be desired as a person quite apart from any temporary role in which one finds oneself. There is a sense of insecurity associated with an identity which depends upon which role one is cast in, because society may without consultation cast you in a different role and so arbitrarily change your identity if your identity depends only upon your role. If the identity of person depends only upon behavior, then a person's identity will tend to depend upon the role which the person plays, quite apart from the person's hidden desires, yearnings, feelings, fears, etc. Behaviorists thus tend to define persons in terms of roles, and do not consider hidden subjective realities to be important. Taboos, collusions, traditions, and the like may prompt people to hide important aspects of themselves --- out of fear. Such hidden aspects are then considered unimportant by narrow-minded behaviorists who are prone to consider only objective behavior to be important. Realities which insensitive people do not perceive can not be objective realities, because universal consensus can not be achieved about such realities. Thus personal realities which are hidden from insensitive persons can not become objective realities, and can not be important to behaviorists. Under such circumstances mutual awareness and mutual understanding are impossible, and sophisticated gathering of data and analysis of then are "meaningless". It is impossible to care intimately about a person unless the person can be perceived as existing independently of the present role which the person is cast in. If there is no person independent of the role being played, then personal intimacy is virtually impossible. Only role playing is possible if only roles exist. Often roles play games with each other, because their motives are hidden. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
