The husband may nurture dependency to keep the woman from getting out from under his control. The woman may only intuit that life can be more fulfilling, but not have the sense of self-confidence to take the great risk of making a break with the husband upon whom she is dependent for sexual fulfillment. Her acceptance of the taboos against sexual fulfillment apart from her husband makes her vulnerable to his every whim and defects of character. Her acceptance of his authority and power confirms his every unloving act as legitimate. Thus, his defects of character are confirmed and perversions persist and grow under the cloak of socially approved exclusivity. Such a relationship is a fertile bed in which males violate their wives sexually, psychologically, economically, physically, politically, spiritually, etc. When unrestrained power is given by society to husbands it corrupts marital relationships. The exercise of unrestrained power violates love and justice and obscures the truth of those violations. The various forms of violence are justified as necessary to maintain law and order; i.e., to keep the power which through corruption occasioned the alienation, estrangement, and sin which bear bitter fruits of frustration and violence. The vicious cycle is fueled by the combination of exclusivity, sexual needs, and male domination. No amount of male cleverness in the formulation of a male dominated technology of laws, lawyers, legalisms, moralisms, and their like will get to the roots of the violence of male chauvinism. There are no technical solutions for male chauvinism---even though male technologies may on occasion play a role in restraining personal power in helpful ways so that it does not occasion extreme forms of alienation, estrangement, and sin. Male chauvinism will be transcended when males have viable alternatives to it which are respected---and through which males find fulfillment. Alternative role models can lead the way out of the prison. Women who refuse to accept exclusivity in marriage and seek to develop personal integrity without perverse dependency can also help.
