It is as if they had a destiny to fulfill a script, a role to play on the stage of life. To fail to play the role according to the script is to fail to fulfill the expectations of destiny, of God. With such an outlook on life it becomes a matter of ultimate concern to be able to read the script. It is difficult to play the role well because the script is written in ways which make it hard to read with confidence. Yet, if one's affirmation depends upon fulfilling the expectations of destiny, it is essential to read the script accurately. For some reason people with this outlook rarely speak much about the implications of other people failing to play their roles according to their script--or about the implications to their lives of the failures of others. It is as if all the other actors on the stage were great actors fulfilling their roles, and only the self was in doubt about the script. Clearly, any coherent concept of the destinies of all interdependent people-- and a sense of the destiny of faithful in the context of the failure of the unfaithful. It is difficult to imagine the fulfillment of human meaning, destiny, and cause-effect relationships simultaneously in the context of frequent human failures to fulfill destiny. Thus the seriousness with which many people regard destiny is likely to be inappropriate. In the light of the above it is clear that the concept of destiny is sinful, tending to occasion, if not promote, sin---the condition of blocked communication; i.e., alienation. Being preoccupied with an externally defined destiny is coercive. Preoccupation with destiny violated unique integrity and the people who promote such preoccupation tend to violate human beings, and so promote sin. To become free of the violence of destiny we need to transcend a coercive sense of destiny, and view our destiny to be that we be free to be ourselves, to fulfill our unique potentials, to enjoy ourselves in being ourselves. Such a way is more fulfilling that compulsively trying to fulfill any conception of what we must do to conform to our predestine script. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
