He assumes it is best for all people. Each person makes a declaration of a conviction of which life style is best for all persons---by a personal choice of a life style. There is then competition as to which life style will win the competition---and be adopted by all people. Thus Jack see the world. John takes for granted that there is no one life style which is best. He assumes that for each person there are a variety of life styles which might be appropriate. Each person chooses the life style which seems most appropriate to their unique personal abilities, dispositions, and context. There is no thought that all persons should, or even might, adopt the same life style. The notion of competition as to which life style will dominate is strange to John. He regards Jack's life style as not suitable to himself, John, but as one which may well suit Jack. In any case, that is Jack's decision to make, and not a matter of concern to others except as Jack's decisions intrude upon their freedoms. Jack regards John's life style as threatening. Jack can not imagine himself adopting John's life style. Jack regards John's life style as a declaration that he, Jack, should adopt John's life style. This is unthinkable to Jack. Thus Jack regards John's life style as intruding upon his freedom to have emotional tranquility. In self defense Jack actively opposes John's right to declare the superiority of his life style by adopting and living it. John's behavior may undermine social stability. John's life style is dangerous and evil. Laws must be past to make John's life style illegal. John is put in a double bind by Jack's immaturity. John would like to be open and honest, but Jack's immaturity occasions violent reactions to John's honesty. John can not be fully honest with Jack without violating Jack's sense of propriety. Not to be fully honest with Jack without violating Jack's sense of propriety, may occasion criticism by Jack of John, for being secretive and excessively private---not joining in the affirmation of Jack's collusions. Jack may regard John as queer, because John does not affirm Jack as expected. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
