You can tell that they are inappropriate because careful analysis will show that they are based upon a logical fallacy. Many people blindly fear nuclear power plants because they do not understand nuclear power. They use the few facts they have with an illogical thought process and conclude that they should be afraid of all forms of nuclear power. If they were better informed and more careful and logical in their thought process they would have no logical reason to be afraid of all forms of nuclear power, and so would be free of their blind fear. People need to be more careful about the logic which leads to their feelings. Many emotional problems could be cleared up by more logical foundations for feelings. Some people are so illogical that they will disagree with the above point of view. They will contend that feelings are not occasioned by logical analysis. Further, they will contend that it is inappropriate to suggest that feelings should not normally be occasioned by logical analysis. They would grant to feelings an independent status, to be respected independently of the merit of the logical analysis upon which they are based. Such a grant would open up a pandora's box of illogical feelings which could never be contained, directed, or understood. Such a grant would be a dangerous one to make. It must be prevented at all costs. People must not be permitted to consider the possibility of granting people the right to fall independently of solid logical grounds. One thing which is obvious is that we must teach people to verbalize their assumptions and presuppositions more carefully. It is dangerous to operate in terms of assumptions and presuppositions which one has carelessly neglected to verbalize. That which has not been verbalized can not be logically analyzed, and so fallacies in non-verbalized assumptions and presuppositions can go undetected if they are permitted to remain unverbalized. Thus it is very important to encourage people to become conscious of their biases by expressing them in words which can then be analyzed. This should be part of the education of every well educated person, and of every person granted the power to hold high office. It is foolish for us to permit people who have not verbalized their assumptions and presuppositions to hold positions of high power and influence. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
