Often they worship that which they and their kind have created: equipment, tools, techniques, knowledge, measurements, analyses, procedures, systems, objectivity, sophistication, etc. Often they worship images of ultimate reality while neglecting intimate personal relationships. Through their ultimate concern for their images and the tools for creating their images they block personal communication, two-way dialogue. They come to live in a non-personal world of their own creation. It is a very orderly and unambiguous world in comparison to the world of personal intimacy. It gives scientists a sense of security and certainty which they have not experienced in their personal lives. Through their worship of their scientific images of ultimate reality--- they find a measure of the security and affirmation which they have not known through personal intimacy. The overt worship of graven images, idols, can more readily be evaluated than collusive worship which pretends to be value-neutral. It is difficult to evaluate the claims of a religion which claims that it is not a religion. Institutions which embody the scientists' ultimate concerns are in many ways similar to churches. They have their rituals, their holy writings, their taboos, and sources of revenue. Traditional religions tend to have explicit theologies. Scientists tend not to explicate their theologies; they pretend that everything is based upon objective evidence and unbiased analysis. Personal considerations presumably do not play a determinative role in the decisions of scientists to develop one theory, rather than another theory. For this reason, the biases of scientists presumably do not merit consideration or explication. Their findings are presumably independent of their personal biases. When people claim to be without bias, look carefully to discover what biases they have. They at least have the bias that they are without bias. They may be unaware of other biases, or they may be aware of them, and have reasons for keeping them hidden. It will be helpful to discover what the "unbiased scientists" worship uncritically and with trusting devotion. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
