Thus we can not be thoroughly objective about our personal relationships. If we attempt to be thoroughly objective about our personal relationships we are likely thereby to turn our personal relationships into thoroughly objective relationships. If we are inclined to perceive our personal relationships through both objective and subjective glasses we are likely to turn our personal relationships into a corresponding mixture of objective and subjective realities. If we refuse to be objective about our personal relationships we are likely to turn our personal relationships into realities which are not grounded in objective realities and tend to lack correspondence. Our personal relationships are likely to correspond in some ways to the ways we choose to talk about them. The realities of our personal relationships often flow from our choices of how to perceive and talk about them. Talking may be literally verbal, using spoken words of a formal vocabulary. Talking in the sense we have used it above may be literally written, using written/printed/published words of a formal vocabulary. Talking may be informal, using words of an informal vocabulary shared in common by a subculture. Talking may be an even less formal and non-verbal communication, which does not use words in the usual sense of what we mean by words. We may share perceptions about our personal relationships which thereby define the nature of our personal relationships. We may think/believe/feel that we are describing how things "are" when in fact we are deciding how they "will be". Through our efforts to share our perceptions of reality---we often create the realities which we perceive and so create alternate realities which we "realize" through our efforts to share them. They become real through our efforts to become aware. We are incapable of proving the reality of many such realities--- independent of our perception of them. They are not objects which are independent of us. Personal relationships are not objective realities and. Their natures depend very critically upon how we "talk" about them. Thus we need to be thoughtful and loving when we talk about personal relationships. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
