Dichotomies arise through exclusivity, and are
transcended through complementary desires. Exclusivity
blocks complementary desires, prevents the bringing
together of a whole, and accentuates the reality of the
parts through polarization. An analysis of the resulting
dichotomy further accentuates the reality of the parts,
rather than their meaning within the context in the whole.
Thus analysis tends to accentuate the exclusivity which
occasioned the focus of the analysis. To the extent that
analysis is intended to help resolve the dichotomy it is
counter-productive---it tends to accentuate the elements
of the dichotomy, rather than give them meaning within the
context of a whole.
People become committed to poles of dichotomies, and
to values which are representative of the poles of
dichotomies. To the extent that their commitments are
completed and without reservation, they will tend to be
exclusive and so tend to accentuate the dichotomy which
occasioned the polar values to which they are committed.
Ultimate commitment and concern with polar values tend to
accentuate dichotomies; and the tensions and conflicts
which are associated with dichotomies. Such concerns and
commitment often prove themselves to be counter-productive
in terms of their own criteria---but those who have such
concerns and commitments are often blinded by their
collusions and can not see the consequences of their
commitments.
The transcendence of dichotomies does not come
through intensified commitments of effort and technology.
The transcendence of dichotomies comes through the
fulfillment of complementary desires which seek to balance
the polarity of one dichotomous value, pleasure, desire,
goal, technology---with that which is complementary.
Complementary concerns may be "orthogonal" in the sense of
the mathematical term in linear vector spaces. To try to
justify such orthogonal desires in terms of each other---
is just as futile as to try to represent basis vectors of
an n-dimensional space in terms of each other. The
understanding of the n-dimensional space is blocked so
long as an effort is made to find less than n basis
vectors which adequately span the space. To try to find
fewer than n basis vectors occasions imbalance in
descriptions.
