We each have had a different environment. For example, those closest to us differ from us by having us in their environment whereas we do not have ourselves in our environment as a separate person. Thus, those who share our environment and thereby are rather like us in their environment---are unlike us in having us in their environment. Those who do not share our environment are thereby different from us in significant ways. Thus nobody else is just like us, even environmentally. We are also usually rather different from each other in heredity. Our difference occasion our having to cope with different problems. We have some small problems and some great problems. When we have found a way to cope with our greatest problems we may be so impressed with the solution that came to us, or which we discovered/developed, that we may wish to share it with others faced with the same great problem. Problems which have been great to us may have so dominated our lives that we may be unable to see that other people may not have the same problem in the same way. We may not recognize that their differences from us occasion their having different problems than we have had. Failing to recognize those differences we may seek to force upon them our solutions to our great problems under the false assumption that our great problem is a universal which is common to all people, and assume that our great solution is thus a universal solution appropriate to all people. Regarding our great problems as universal problems, and our great solutions as universal solutions will tend to violate other people's unique integrities. It is violent to insist that unique people solve their different problems in standardized ways. Similarities and differences both need to be considered in developing wise responses to situations. Identical responses to situations are appropriate only if the situations are identical---which never happens. Thus we need to be cautious about absolutizing our personal solutions to our great problems of life. Getting other people to conform to our life style is thus not likely to be helpful to them. We also need to recognize the difference between dilemmas and technical problems; and respond to each in appropriate ways. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
