Yet, when dealing with large collections of nuclei, atoms, and molecules statistical descriptions become central and the laws of random chance overlay those those of cause-and-effect which govern individual events. There is neither reason nor meaning in the human sense in these processes. They demonstrate to humans no purpose, reason, intent, feeling, or goal. Destiny in the human sense is not a fruitful concept in terms of which to understand such elementary processes. Human lives are impinged upon by many chance events: accidents, storms, meetings between people, opportunities, encounters with new ideas, sickness, bureaucratic mistakes, equipment malfunctions, etc. Some people respond to these as indications of the operation of "the fates" somewhat in the Greek sense. "Ours is not to know, what will be, will be." Such people may respond with resignation or rebellion of one form or another: creative, destructive, joyful, angry, depressed, excited, etc. People who seriously accept the operation of "the fates" tend not to seriously expect to find the meaning of their lives flowing to them from outside themselves. They do not expect any ultimate "rights" to be respected by nature or by other people who are also the victims of fate. They cope as best they can with their random good and evil chance-fortunes. Some people regard the universe as governed by a power greatly concerned with the affairs of the human race and of individual people. If they regard such a power as very powerful and benevolent, they may feel that they have a right to expect the power to see to it that all goes well in their lives. To such people unfortunate chance events will tend to pose serious problems: are they punishments, proofs of the impotence of the supreme power, demonstrations of the existence of a demonic counter- force, indications that the supreme power is capricious, etc? Even other people may find their meaning in life by making the most of the chance opportunities, fortunes, misfortunes, etc. which come their way. They may feel a fellowship with a superior power joining with them in making life meaningful by creatively responding to what "the fates" bring. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
