The ways that class time is spent affirms some values and neglects other values. All aspects of how a teacher spends here or his own time, leads students to spend their time, affirm some values and neglects other values. Education is not value-neutral. Leaders can not be value neutral. Teachers are educational leaders, and by how they lead they affirm some values and neglect other values. Educational leadership should be recognized as leadership in the affirmation of selected values. Students should not accept educational leadership uncritically as if the assignments and the contents of tests were beyond question. If the worth and propriety of teachers assignments and testing are not questioned by students the students will uncritically internalize the covert values of the teachers. The worth of the assignments and test questions should be topics of discussion so that students may come to their own convictions regarding the relevance of the subject matter which is brought to their attention by the teacher. If students do not regard the subject matter as of worth to them they are likely to give it much attention; the teacher will find it difficult to bring it meaningfully to their attention. A failure to discuss the value questions implicit in the choice of subject matter can thus undermine the motivation of students to give attention to the recommended subject matter. Teachers can only recommend to students that they give attention to chosen subject matter. It is futile to command students to give their attention to unilaterally chosen subject matter---for attention given upon command is not effective in educational efforts, it occasions little educmement. Commands to not educe, draw out. Commands tends to inhibit, repress, suppress---not educe. Values which are unilaterally and dictatorially affirmed through assignments and tests are values which rebellious adolescents are unlikely to internalize and affirm. Out of spite adolescents are likely to play games with their teachers who dictatorially affirm values through assignments and tests. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
