We may purpose to achieve the pleasure which another enjoys by fulfillment of their desires---only to discover that purposing is different than desiring; and be disappointed to find that conforming our behavior according to a purpose---does not occasion the pleasure which comes from giving ourselves to the expression and fulfillment of our desires. Substituting purposes, objectives, goals, and programs---for desires, often occasions perversions. We may desire the practical advantages of accomplishments which are achieved by those who discipline themselves to fulfill purposes with integrity---only to discover that sincere and intense desire which grips us with great power, does not occasion accomplishments without disciplined behavior which is conformed by an appropriate purpose. Desires and purposes can not substitute for each other. It is perverse to purpose to have a desire. Conformal behavior which is directed by a purpose does not occasion desires with integrity. Thus marriages of convenience are often devoid of intimate desires, children who go to college to fulfill their parents' dreams are not motivated with integrity, and the "good works" of legalists are often misdirected by perverse "desires." A desire to have a purpose may be fulfilled through considerations, decisions, and actions which define the purpose and the behavior which will fulfill the purpose. A purpose can NOT have integrity in the absence of considerations, decisions, and actions which embody the purpose in a person who is dedicated to the purpose. It is not enough to desire to have a purpose. To purpose to have a purpose (in the absence of desires) is likely to occasion aimless articulation of statements-of-"purpose" which lack passion. Such purposing is not likely to be fruitful or fulfilling. To desire to have a desire in the absence of the desire which is desired---is likely to occasion disappointment---for desiring a desire does not prompt the desire any more than purposing to have a desire---achieves the desire. Desires and purposes are appropriate only within their own domains. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
