Perversions are occasioned by efforts to achieve union in the absence of love. There is no meaning in the achievement of union without love. It is not the achievement which is meaningful. The meaning is occasioned by love, not by achievement. Thus, techniques to achieve union are meaningless if they violate love, or are used without love. A technocratic society is a relatively meaningless society because it is dominated by techniques rather than motivated by love. The techniques are not evil; they are just incomplete without love. In the absence of love we tend to use techniques inappropriately and/or tend to become preoccupied with techniques as a focus of ultimate concern---to the exclusion of concern for people. Then techniques for unification become counter-productive. We become perverted in our efforts to achieve unification. One technique to achieve unification is to promote fear of a common enemy. A unified community may be achieved by generating a common fear of a common enemy--- for then members of the community may work together to defend themselves against the external threat. Thus technocrats who wish to create a community may use the technique of creating a common enemy---promoting alienation from those outside the community in order to generate unity within the community. Exclusivity is another perverse technique used to achieve unification. Only those people who conform to certain criteria for acceptability are welcome within the community. Those who fear exclusion are thus coerced into conforming to the certain criteria---thus violating their own unique selves to achieve unification in a conformist unity. Collusions, taboos, brainwashing, and specialized education play central roles in such artificially unified communities. In the absence of love, excommunication is readily used to enforce conformity under penalty of social death for any failure not to conform. The non-conformist is cut off from communication of various forms---excluded from social events, ignored in daily encounters, shunned, institutionalized, imprisoned, and in many ways put to death socially and/or physically. In the absence of love, techniques for achieving unification are meaningless. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
