Our values are embodied in the patterns which lead to our behavior. The patterns are of many forms; ethical and moral examples and injunctions; religious teachings and rituals, family and community traditions, role models, foci for rebellion, formal laws, informal laws, taboos, collusions, professional traditions and standards, personal habits, formal and informal contracts and commitments, expectations, etc. Many of the patterns which occasion our behavior are not traditionally considered to be values---yet they are more important in occasioning our behavior than are many of the patterns which are usually identified as values. Much of our puzzlement about human behavior originates in our failure to recognize the wide range in the nature of the patterns which act as the values which direct our decisions and action, our behavior. Value-conflicts occur when our various patterns call for conflicting decisions and actions. Value conflicts may exist within a single person, or in the relationships between people. Conflict resolution involves the recognition of the patterns which are occasioning the conflicting decisions and actions---taking note of the different natures of the patterns, and of how they occasion the conflicting behavior. Conflict resolution cannot be accomplished by dominantly verbal methods, because most patterns which occasion our behavior are not verbal patterns. Our primary values are often not expressible in verbal statements. Verbal analysis is inadequate to the task of understanding value conflicts, because few of our primary values are embodied in verbal representations. Conflict resolution must involve non-verbal modes of understanding based upon non-verbal modes of perception and awareness. Conflict resolution will flow from an increased awareness of the variety of values which pattern our lives---and of the situations in which our various value patterns occasion conflicts. We need to become aware of the range of propriety of each of our value patterns; the situations in which each value pattern is likely to guide us wisely, and the situations in which each value pattern is unlikely to guide us wisely. All values have a range of propriety. Most values have limited ranges of propriety---and occasion conflict when they are affirmed outside their limited range of propriety. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
