That which we tend to ignore in a regular way---tends to become forgotten, and so become of even lesser importance. Thus, specialization which tends to concentrate our attention in narrow ways--- tends to make us regard most areas of our lives as of little importance. As we tend to ignore those areas which are of lesser importance, we tend to confirm our judgment that they are of lesser importance, and may even forget that such areas of our lives ever played any role in our daily consciousness. This may happen without there ever being any motivation to repress awareness of those areas of our lives. We may never have been threatened by or on account of those areas of our lives. They may have been just pushed out of consciousness by an intensification of attention upon a few areas which came to demand virtually all of our attention and resources. Technical training focuses our attention via formal languages---upon systematic ways of coping which involve objectivity and analysis. Such focusing of attention reduces the amount of time available for consciousness of primary feelings and responsiveness to other persons' feelings. The more time we spend in formal technical activities, the less time we have for attention to human feelings. As we learn to ignore our feelings in favor of technical activities---we tend to discover that we are more and more willing to agree with technocrats that technical considerations merit more and more attention. There never needs to be any discussion about the relative values of feelings and technical considerations. The value conflict need never be recognized. By evading an explicit consideration of the conflict---the technocrats are able to brain-wash us into feeling that their technical considerations are more valuable than are our feelings. We are taught by example to feel that the pure logic, objectivity, analysis, etc. of technocratic ways--- are preferable to enjoyment of feelings occasioned by intimate personal relationships. We are not taught to recognize the role which feelings play---in our being taught that feelings are not important... by how we are being taught not to recognize the role which feelings play in our relationships. Few people recognize that role. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
