To make such a demonstration convincing nonconformists must be made to suffer greatly. Thus their script calls for a great deal of suffering. The legalists who write the script are not interested in responding to the need of those who suffer, for they are interested in seeing people suffer in order to validate the hypothesis that their legalistic rules are necessary to protect people from their particular deepest desires, instincts, feelings, and emotions. To legalists, suffering is an essential tool, a means to the end of proving their rules necessary. A world devoid of suffering would be a world that did not need rules and was not generating any need for rules---a terrible condition for legalists to contemplate. For the legalists to be successful in their plan, they must hide it from view through collusions into which they invite all persons, including the "exemplary devils" whom they press into their service. Such "exemplary devils" are excommunicated for failing to conform to legalists' rules---in keeping with the legalists' script. Their excommunication is part of the script and further helps in creating the setting in which the dire consequences "flow" from the failure of the people to conform to the legalists' rules. In this way the "unnatural consequences" of the non-conformity are made to appear as if they were natural consequences over which nobody had any choice. The people who suffer those consequences are said to be punished by God who ordained that nonconformists suffer dire consequences for failing to conform themselves to the legalists' rules. The legalists thus cast God in the role of being their God of Excommunication---in order that their hypothesis (that we cannot trust ourselves or other persons) might be proved valid. They cast themselves as the faithful (loyal) servants of their God of Excommunication, and play the role very profitably as God's self righteous servants. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
