We are asked to have faith in (loyalty to) their legal rules which will help keep us from respecting our deepest desires, instincts, feelings, and emotions---and so act in ways which are not in our best interest. We are asked to replace our trust in our own unique selves, with a trust in a standardized "transcendent" set of rules which are presumed to serve the best interests of all kinds of different people. Needless to say, the legalists are preoccupied with proving that their rules and laws are needed, necessary, required. To prove that the legalists' rules are needed it is necessary to have people break those rules to illustrate that breaking them results in dire consequences. In strange ways some people are chosen to play this role of validating the need for legalists' rules. Ostensibly the validation process proves that the dire consequences are the natural results of violating the legalists' rules, which are ostensible God's rules. The test of the hypothesis is not, however, carried out in an unbiased laboratory. Those who manage the test have an ultimate preoccupation with proving that their hypothesis is valid, that the violation of the legalists' rules leads to dire consequences "in a natural way." Thus it is essential to guarantee that dire consequences do follow, and to obscure the way by which it is arranged that dire consequences do follow. How is that done? Via collusions people are chosen and cast in the role of "exemplary devils", people who are so perverse as to violate the legalists' rules---and "naturally" suffer the consequences. Who are chosen? Those who most clearly see what the legalists are doing, usually see them through the eyes of love, and thereby threaten the scheme by which legalists might prove their hypothesis. The legalists through fear of such lovers cast them in the roles of "exemplary devils". When so cast, such people may lose faith in themselves without at the same time becoming faithful (loyal) to the legalists' rules. They are thus "set up" to break the rules without the faith needed to transcend the script which requires them to suffer the dire consequences of violating the legalists' rules. They become "exemplary devils" and are crucified. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
