Through prayer we seek to grow while in touch with our deepest and most real feelings, desires, and needs---with the hope that they may be affirmed in ways which will fulfill us while in meaningful relationships with others. Through prayer we seek to transcend selfishness, while affirming our deepest self in loving relationships. Prayer promotes union: between our deepest needs and desires on the one hand, and profound perspectives upon those needs and desires on the other hand; between our own and others' needs. Prayer is a way to promote union in love between different people, by placing personal relationships in profound contexts for gaining perspectives upon personal needs and desires. Our deepest needs and desires include our needs and desires for affirmations of our bodies and our sexual yearnings; for affectionate and erotic relationships. We need a transcendent presence which will provide for us a profound context for gaining wise perspectives upon these needs and desires. That presence is not found within subcultures, institutions, and communities that disaffirm affectionate, sexual, and erotic relationships---through indifference, neglect, suppression, embarrassment, repression, depression, delusion, elusion, collusion, ignorance, perversion, exclusivity, excommunication, taboo, legalism, moralism, etc. Sexual prayers are not familiar to people who are the victims of such subcultures, institutions, and communities. The affirmation of human bodies, sexuality, and erotic desires through prayer is unthinkable and unimaginable in such a context, and so profound perspectives are blocked. People are unable to be in touch with their most real feelings, desires, and needs---and cannot relate them to the development of meaningful relationships with others in love. They are unable to pray in ways which affirm themselves as creatures with sexual bodies having erotic needs which transcend selfishness. Our deepest prayers are occasioned by our deepest needs, desires, and feelings. If we do not pray when we experience our deepest needs, desires, and feelings---then we are unlikely to pray on other occasions. Without prayer we act without profound perspectives --- often violently. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
